Youth groups and leadership organizations have frowned at the apex Igbo socio-cultural group Ohanaeze Ndigbo, for its attack on the governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello over the 2023 presidency rotation, noting that it was an insult on the Nigerian youths.

Ohanaeze while responding to a comment made by governor Bello where he said Nigerians should be allowed to make their choices based on competence and that rotational presidency is unconstitutional, said that the governor was still in school when the rotational agreement was reached between the South and the Northern region of Nigeria.

The top Igbo group in the statement reportedly released in Enugu on Monday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, suggested that the governor is a youth and should not have a say in the rotation of the top political seat in Nigeria.

In its reaction, notable youth organizations from across the country with membership strength of millions of Nigerians say its attention has been drawn to the outburst against governor Bello, adding that the school reference made by Ohanaeze is a denigration against young Nigerians and a deliberate attempt to deny the youth the opportunity of occupying presidency after the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari. The youth groups warned that Nigerian youths will not be intimated by anyone any longer as they have suffered so long being neglected in the national scheme of things.

In a rejoinder to the statement of the Igbo group, the youth bodies disclosed that the rotational presidency has never been followed and was never recognized in the Constitution of the country. It explains that the initiative was only proposed by the Peoples Democratic Party and did not even materialize in the long run.

It also gave the instance of how the presidency moved from North to South after the death of former President Musa Yaradua as his tenure was not finished by the north before former President Goodluck Jonathan took over. In their explanation, the groups said, at that point, the Igbo group did not talk about rotation so that power could remain in the North but the constitution was duly followed.

Youths have come out to say, 2023 is about youthfulness and capabilities and that young Nigerians can not afford to fold their hands any longer. It said Nigeria has outgrown a stage where people are judged by their age and school year before aspiring for political positions rather than their abilities and competence.
