The Nigeria Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, has died on Friday evening in a plane crash that took place in Kaduna state exactly 115 days after his appointment for the top military job.
The incident was confirmed to a local newspaper by one of General Attahiru’s close aides who said that he could confirm that the COAS was with his wife on board the aircraft.
The spokesperson of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, had earlier disclosed that the incident involved the Nigerian Airforce plane but did not disclose the casualties of the crash.
It was gathered that the Chief of Army Staff, his wife, and six other senior Nigerian military staff were on board the plane.
The cause of the crash was not immediately ascertained but being investigated, the NAF spokesman added.
An intelligence source who visited the site disclosed that all the oj and four crew members died in the crash.
The source said he was informed by the villagers that the plane already caught fire from up before it exploded and crashed.
