International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on 8 March around the world.

It is a global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

The theme of this year is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”.

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals, and especially Goal 3 on gender equality and women’s empowerment, entail a commitment by States to promote mechanisms that give women a voice in politics and governance institutions.

Article 7 (a) and (b) of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discriminations Against Women states that States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in the political and public life of the country and, in particular, shall ensure to women, on equal terms with men, the right: (a) To vote in all elections and public referenda and to be eligible for election to all publicly elected bodies;
(b) To participate in the formulation of government policy and the implementation thereof and to hold public office and perform all public functions at all levels of government.
Article 7 emphasizes States’ responsibility to appoint women to senior leadership positions, at all levels (local, national, international) of government, all government bodies, the judiciary, and to encourage political parties to do the same.

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action deals extensively with the issue of women in power and decision-making. Through the Declaration and Platform for Action, States are committed to taking concrete measures to ensure women’s equal access to and full participation in power structures and decision-making, and to increase women’s capacity to participate in decision-making and leadership, in accordance with its detailed recommendations.

Despite all these conventions and protocols state parties have not done enough to ensure full participation of women in politics, governance and decision-making processes especially in Nigeria. While keeping hope alive, one man is changing the narrative today in Nigeria. The Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Yahaya Bello has surpassed the Beijing 35% affirmative action for women in politics and governance by engaging women in governance, police formulation and decision-making processes through appointments and elections. For the total realization of women’s rights as encapsulated in the article 7 (a) and (b), leaders must go beyond putting out fantastic policies and programmes to guarantee women’s social, political, cultural rights but summons the political wills to cause it to happen.

In the light of this, the Governor of Kogi State has chosen to celebrate the 2021 International Women’s Day by involving them actively in policy formation, decision-making, leadership and governance in Kogi State. Bellow is the list of women in Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration today.
