The Katsina State Police Command has paraded Najib Shehu, a 200-level Education Management student at Federal University, Dustin-ma, over the passing of his stepmother Asiya Mohammed, 60.

According to reports, the undergraduate and his stepmother got into a fight when Najib, his father, and Asiya were at home.

Najib allegedly entered the kitchen during the argument, grabbed a pestle, and hit both his father’s leg and stepmother’s head with it.

While Najib’s stepmother was also rushed to a nearby hospital and was later determined to be dead by a doctor, his father was reported to be recovering in a hospital at the time.

Najib described the incident in the police command center, claiming that he had a falling out with his stepmother and that she was the one who attempted to hit him with the pestle.

“My name is Najib Shehu,” he proclaimed. I am a 25-year-old student studying education management at Federal University in Dutsin-ma at the 200 level. However, on that particular Thursday, I had just finished praying and had come home from our house. My stepmother and I have been having problems.

“My father was in the sitting room when my stepmother entered holding a pestle and started threatening me with it. She raised the pestle up to hit my head but I defended it. Then, she wanted to hit my leg but I jumped up, dodged it and it hit my father’s leg as he was coming to intervene.
“Again, my stepmother raised the pestle up and wanted to hit my head with it but I pushed her, and in the process, the pestle hit her head and caused her to fall down and die.

“My mother was the first wife of my father and they are separated. But I have been staying together with my father and stepmother at the Ambassador Quarters in Katsina. I regret my action; I did not want to commit the crime.”

During the parade, SP Gambo Isah, the state police public relations officer, presented the pestle that the suspect is accused of using to murder the 60-year-old woman.

“You know it is a murder case and we must investigate thoroughly. We shall arraign him in court immediately after the completion of our investigation,” Isah said.

Najib, 25, and Asiya had an argument at their home in the Ambassador Quarters, Katsina, at 4 p.m. on August 18, 2022, according to a statement made by the command about the incident.

“He went to the kitchen, grabbed a pestle, hit her head severally with it and she sustained head injuries and was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

“In the spur of the moment, the suspect also hit his father’s leg severally with the said pestle and he sustained fractures in different parts of his leg. The suspect was arrested and he confessed to the commission of the offence. The said pestle has been recovered as an exhibit.”

There has been no official response to the incident from Najib’s institution as of the time this article was filed.
